welcome to the advanced engineering of info meeting so this is a information video for the parents and the students of a 2021-22 school year I misses Jake I teach the advanced engineering program at the J T C and I'm excited for this upcoming school year in this information presentation I'm going to go over a couple different things so the first one that I'm going to cover is what you need to do before school starts so these are assignments that the parent and the student needs to complete together because they're supposed to parent permission and student permission that you're going to sign up for what is the concurrent enrollment and the required forms then I'm going to go over some general information about the JATC including parking busing and the schedule and then the last thing that I'm going to cover is information specific about the advanced engineering program what are the expectations that I have for you what courses are you signing up for the fees that are associated with it which are optional and then at the end of give you some times for office hours if you have any questions so the first thing that I'm going to cover is what you need to have completed before school starts so this is before the first day of school I asked you to complete two things the first is concurrent enrollment and the second is the required forms the disclosure concurrent enrollment is what you need to do with our partners school which is applying and registering for the program and then the second thing the required forms and disclosures are the things that we have you fell out as you would for any class give me an estimate formation and also accepting some of our different things that we do in this class so the first thing is the concurrent enrollment we have a new school that we're doing concurrent enrollment with this year and we're really excited about this partnership Southern Utah our city has a program set up with their concurrent enrollment that lines up with the Utah standard which allows us to offer more concurrent enrollment credit so we're going to offer two different classes at have to credit this year for up to 6 credits of college-level this will be good if you're interested in pursuing Engineering in college but I do want to have one caveat that's important to note not all universities and programs accept all concurrent cut so it's on the student to know when they're go to apply for school it's a good thing to do is check with the counselor before you sign up for your classes for the first semester of college at to make sure that these classes are going to transfer if they don't transfer don't go for General Credit that help you when you're going to apply for classes you will have more credits to apply with but they might not count in your specific engineering program so that's something to check on however if they are going to count especially this is a great opportunity but one of the things about the signing up for the concurrent enrollment is the new application best which includes waving office for concurrent enrollment student however they're not applying this process until July 1st so what that means is you can apply in June however you'd pay the $40 concurrent enrollment fee if you wait first they'll be no fee so I'd encourage you to sign up in July and just make sure you sign up before we start school so what do you do when you go to apply for concurrent enrollment credit you'll go to the link that's located on the JATC website so that links also in the email that I send out but if you go to Jordan texture organ go into the advanced engineering program you'll find that concurrent enrollment form that has those links on it what the link will take you to little bypass kind of the steps you need to click in suu to get to the concurrent enrollment page but the concurrent enrollment link will pop up and it's this participation form now this form is the same for a lot of Utah and Colonel my program when you go through this Farm you're going to need to make sure it says suu on it I've had students did in the past and they've done it for slick right so they've applied to the wrong program so make sure it says suu when you get through the forms and it tells you what school you're applying for the other thing that you're going to want to make sure you have is your home High School is the one that you want to select jtcc will not show up so you apply with your home high school so you'll go to this website you apply for the ask you for an email it's important when you do this to not use the Jordan District assigned to email that's the one that ends in my. Jordandistrict.org that email only accept emails from other Jordan School District Sophia why would that email you won't ever receive your acceptance letter so you want to use a student email that is their own personal email but that they're going to check so that they see when that acceptance letter comes in this email will also be receiving any updates that suu sends throughout the year like dates for when fees are due so it's important for that student to have one that they can check often maybe one that's on their phone acceptance they said it could take up to three to seven days so if you don't receive the acceptance the next day just give it a couple days and you should receive an email from suu confirming that you've applied and if you've been accepted after you've been accepted the next step is to activate your suu portal so to do your SAU portal you'll go to my suu portal at the SAU main page so it should be up in the top once you've done that then they'll ask you for an email you put that same application email that you put on the previous step and now you set up that my suu portal so once you set up that portal you then can move on to step three and four in the destruction process so step 3 would be then to register for the classes and they have not sent us the CR and numbers that specifically telling you what class do you need to sign up for I should get that by Joe and then I can email that out so when you go to register but you'll put in that crn number that specifically takes you to engineering in the 21st century which is going to be the fall class to sign up for with my name listed as the instructor so if you don't you you're welcome to email me with any questions but I should get that to you by July 1st they said that they would send that to us once you registered for the class then you can play the feet one important thing is in the fall you're only red spring for the one Engineering in the 21st century and then in the spring you'll register for the 3D engineering which is our of Capstone class so you're just signing up 413 credit class once you register then it's important to go ahead and do stuff for which is the pay for the credit things did waive the concurrent enrollment application fee but you do still have to pay for the course however this is one of the cheapest college classes you'll ever take because it's only $15 at $5 a credit it's important to pay for this application fee because if you don't pay it they're going to drop you from the course at that and when do so register and pay for the class that's going to be important if you have any concurrent enrollment credits problems as you go through this process you're welcome to email me this is the first year we're going through SCU so please be patient as I work with them to make sure that we get you all of life the second thing that I you to do which is both for the students and the parents is to fill out the required forms and disclosures that I have for the jtp program you can do this at the advanced engineering page so you go to Jordan tax.org you go to the engineering program ranked some programs engineering and then in that engineering programs on the right hand side at list all the different programs you're in the advanced engineering program so you go to engineering and you can see their stuff forms for the 22 122 school year so you're going to hit disclosure that is something that you can read through that gives you information about the class and what you're agreeing to when you sign up for the classes the student and then you can go into the required forms and that's going to have a form that says I have read the disclosure I also asked you for some different forms such as a movie permission for two movies that will watch throughout the year that are PG-13 rating equipment check out if you need to check out a laptop or a engineering ruler to take home for the night TSA authorization media release form website for registration and acknowledgement of receipt if you have a on any of those feel free to contact me but you'll go through and the student and the parent will sign the form and this avoids of having to send a big packet of papers home and we can get this all done before we start the first day of school but those are the two assignments that I asked you to do before the first day of school the next we're going to talk about the general gatc so welcome to the JATC this might be your first year or you might be coming here again you may have taken engineering program and already been here and this is your second year but we're at the JATC North Campus that's the one up at 9301 South White Fort Road it's up at the Redwood the 90th South kattfest so we have some buildings on the campus and that's where we hold classes it's the southwest corner of the campus now you can get here two ways you can either drive your own car and park and ticketing store two weeks after school starts so you can come the first day and drive yourself but once we have the first day of school will have a beginning of school assembly and they'll go over how to fill out that parking form and pay for the parking which is $20 for the old school year if after this two weeks you decide you're not going to drive very often you can always do the daily rate which is $2 a day but I'd encourage you if you're planning on driving to pay for that $20 but again. meeting doesn't start until after 2 weeks so you can come the first day and they will not take you for parking whatever we could come at 3 bus so each of the Jordan district schools have buses that will come the JPC and then they'll take you back to your home high school after the program is done busing schedule is on the jtcc website and it tells you the schedule for each of the high school as far as class schedule goes I'm we're a little bit adjusted to allow the busing to have enough time to bring the students here and take you back sore morning class starts at 7:40 and ends at 10 which will give you enough time to make it back to your high school in order to take your next class or you're in the afternoon class which starts at 11:30 and ends at 1:45 on Fridays they have the adjusted schedule for this new year they've told us that the instruction time is from 8:30 to 1 clock so once we get further information about what that means for our schedule to jtcc will make sure that to get that out to you but for now just know that is suggested and we'll have those times for you by the beginning of school in the morning they do serve breakfast here at the jccc and I'll give you a short break to go and grab that if you would like and in the afternoon they serve lunch they serve lunch from 10:50 to 11:30 up until 1 class. you're welcome to come and eat in the cafeteria here for lunch or you can eat somewhere else but then class starts at 11:30 as far as getting extra help for me how about personalized learning time set up in the Friday schedule which is a specific time set aside so students can get help if they need help from the teachers outside of class however I am also willing to help anytime I'm here until 3 everyday and if you're in the afternoon classes easy to stay after if you're in the morning class you can schedule with me and I'm willing to work with the students so that we can make sure that you stay up-to-date on everything that you're learning in our program next I want to go over the advanced engineering program so what that means is when you sign up for this Advanced engineering program you're actually signing up for four classes per semester you're taking engineering 1010 which is the concurrent enrollment credit with suu and you're also taking civil engineering and architecture now these classes don't show up as engineering at 10:10 and someone today in architecture only in your program because of the way that the concurrent enrollment credit goes it all Melissa's engineering principles wanted to but the reason you're taking it is now you're getting that college concurrent credit and we cover some things that are a little different than engineering principles 1 and 2 if you have taken this before and then someone today in architectural show up at the cat picture design class this is just the way that the state has set up these programs MR2 you'll be done with those first semester classes and now you're going to take aerospace engineering and then the engineering Capstone class the cat classes also consider my credit so I'm going to go over these classes in a little bit more detail but I just wanted to show that overview because it's a good understanding that you're taking four different classes which means you're getting four different grades so you can be doing really well and Engineering 10:10 and maybe be a little behind and someone to nearing will those would be two different grades on your transcript right so maybe you would have an A and one and a b-minus in the other. It's not one grade for the whole program the first semester to taking engineering 1010 that's the concurrent enrollment Credit in this class we cover all different types of engineering so we'll cover electrical civil mechanical and even more but this class is really a good basis it's an introduction to engineering in the 21st century and it's that introduction course that you would take in college civil engineering and architecture is a program you're learning a little bit more about the engineering that you live in right so Building Bridges roads and we're going to do some design projects for your designing some of those things and we're using a program called Revit Autodesk Revit with that program so you'll be designing a home for example in this River program and so will have access to that program here at school I also have some laptops that I can check out to students if you want to work on it additionally at home but I do I want to let you know that if you want to mess around with that program before school starts or you want to be able to take home your homework when you get here that you can access Autodesk Revit at home it's free for students so if you want to prep for it you can get a free account it's also a good idea after last year to get it at home so that if you end up getting sick or you have to be online that you can work on it at home so you can access the software if you go autodesk.com education you'll find links to get to the free software and you could get rid of it it is a bit program so it does require a pretty robust computer to be able to download it I can download it on laptops for example but some computers depending on their age and their size may have difficulty with this program so if you can't get the program you don't need to stress out this is just an option if you would like to download it all the second semester you're signed up for aerospace engineering and then a cat's tongue coarse and aerospace engineering we're going to cover some different things about the Aerospace industry including rocket how planes fly what they're doing with space travel and learn things about those Industries and then for the engineering Capstone class your union using all the skills you've learned in all the previous classes as well as any previous years you've taken to do a design project so we have quarter 1/4 3 and quarter for design project has three is going to be related to TSA which is a student competition and then quarter for is going to be a Capstone design project or at the year you'll present a design that you worked on to a panel of Engineers and they'll give you feedback on that design do two things with this engineering Capstone class there's concurrent enrollment with the Capstone but that registration is until spring so you don't need to worry about that until later on in the year and then the TSA does have a $5 membership this is an optional fee but I would encourage everyone to sign up for it again it's one of the chi best student organizations that your sim can be involved with but it's only $5 and it allows you as a student to participate all the school competition and the winners of the school comp we'll also go to state since a great Resume Builder and you have the option of competing with students across the state with your project as far as other used to bring up attendance and absences so the ideal right is teamwork is in the standard and very important to engineering so students should be in class everyday or if you know they will be in class everyday at I helped contribute to their group project and they accomplish more together this is very important right if you're in a team and you're working on a project and one of your team members is there you can get behind you can having unfair one person's doing more work than the other team member so it's really important to come to class however I do understand the reality sometimes there's absences you can get sick you could get quarantine you could have a family event however communication is going to be key so the students right you are responsible to your group members and to me with your absences so we're treating this more like a college class so what I mean is when you come to class and you know you're going to miss the next day or a week in advance or month in advance it's your responsibility to let me know and to let your group members know and figure out what do you need to do to have a good amount of work done for that group project so maybe that means Zoom calling in when we're working on the group so you can contribute or taking some of the group work home so that you can do it but that's going to be kind of your responsibility to figure out how you can make that happen happy to help with that but that's something that I want you two to be aware of whatever things are important for this class will we're going to be doing a lot of problem solving we're going to be using the design process we're going to be working on Hands-On and with all three of those things it's important to keep trying so what I think is one of the most important skills that you'll come to this class with is is like grit right is when you run into a roadblock to keep working through it and that's what the design process is all about right so being focused on solving the problem and being okay with failure and continuing to work on it and to tell her no skills and some other things we're going to do we're going to have lectures so I'm going to give you information we're also going to have presentations where you're teaching your classmates information right here standing up and being the teacher we're going to do a lot of mass or going to do a lot of group work we're going to do some repair because writing out your ideas is a really important part of being an engineer as well as representing your ideas and computer and physical models I'm so all of these things will help us to prepare you to be an engineer and to prepare you for college and education that you need to get there I'm a little bit of background about me so my name is Noel shake and I actually worked as a civil engineer for a company called Terracon in California so I studied someone Aaron in school I got my bachelor's and my master's degree in civil engineering with an emphasis in geotechnical which you'll learn about what that meant I was working on projects that involve the soil and some structures as well primarily enteric on the company that I work for I worked with a pool so we would do soil report for pools we do the structural engineering for high-end residential pools in the Bay Area some other important things about the class is we have the option of getting a hoodie or a t-shirt for the class so this isn't required but I just wanted to let you know about it and if you would like to get it. week of school fees are $25 in the t-shirts are $10 we have a good store of them but we don't have an unlimited supply of all supply all stages of this is something you're interested in you can email me and I'll make sure to hold that size for you do it so that's an optional feet right so with optional fees of you can pay those online on Skyward but in order to get it on Skyward you can just email me the student named and the request for what fees you'd like and I can put those on the Skyward account you can also pay those throughout the school year at the front office so again they're just optional if you would like to pay those before school starts supplies go I'll give you a notebook that you're going to do all your work in for the whole school year but you will need a pen or pencil in order to use for your notebook so please have that with you every day in class and then a calculator going to be really useful we do have a class set of calculators that we share with the other engineering program however it's a good idea to have your own calculator especially if you're wanting to pursue engineering because it's going to help you get comfortable with how to type the numbers into your calculator but encouraged you to have an actual calculator not just your phone so that you can get used to that and use that calculator on test the One requirement that you're going to want is you're going to want to calculate with trigonometry trigonometric capability so it can do trig functions like sine and cosine we're not going to do any graphing in this class so you don't need a graphing calculator however a graphing calculator can be is cuz it has trig functions so if you have any options on that you're welcome to email me about that so a question or questions on anything else email is typically the best way to contact me and we can set up a time we can talk on the phone or call or we can resolve it through email but my email is Noel.
