Program Description - Aviation Science: Drones

The aviation science program helps students jumpstart their education for a successful and exciting career in the aviation/aerospace industry. The courses offered are meant to help students explore the drone industry and specify the operations of drones. The program includes classroom academics, hands-on activities such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle missions, and industry tours!

Fall Semester

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS): Prepares students with the aeronautical knowledge necessary to conduct or interact with Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) (drone) operations within the National Airspace System (NAS). This course will prepare students for the Commercial Drone Operator FAA Knowledge Exam. Course content includes applicable regulations, airspace classification, and operating requirements, effects of weather, loading and performance, communication and emergency procedures, physiological effects of drugs and alcohol, aeronautical decision-making and judgment, and airport operations. This course does include hands on flight instruction of a large variety of drones.

UAS Lab: Intermediate Flight: Continues your exploration of aviation principles and gives students experience with various categories of drones in action.

Spring Semester

UAS Lab: Exploration of Industry Applications Photo and Video: Students will experience real-world applications of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), focusing on how drone technology is used across various industries such as photography, and videography. Students develop hands-on skills in flight operations, camera techniques, and editing.

Unmanned Aerial Systems Capstone: Is self-directed project-oriented course that may be an internship with a UAS company, research project, advanced application of UAS skills, or design/build project. This course is the pinnacle in this pathway and will provide a kickstart to a student’s career in Unmanned Systems.

Program Description - Aviation Science: Flight

The aviation science flight: private pilot program helps students jumpstart their education for a successful and exciting career in the aviation/aerospace industry. The courses offered are meant to help students explore both flying and non-flying careers within the world of aviation. The program includes classroom academics and hands-on activities like flight simulator training and industry tours!

Fall Semester

Survey of Aviation Science: Designed for all students interested in aviation careers. Includes a general knowledge of aviation, historical events, and aerospace studies/development opportunities. Studies aviation and aerospace terminology, how aircraft and spacecraft fly, research and development of future systems, government and industry roles in the growth of aviation, and potential careers in aviation.

Spring Semester

Ground Private Pilot: Introduces the airplane to entry-level student pilots as they prepare for flight training. Stresses airport systems, air traffic control procedures, aviation weather, air navigation, radio communication procedures, and Federal Aviation Regulations. Students will learn to operate flight simulators in the classroom and have the opportunity to fly the motion simulator in the lab. Prepares students for the FAA Private Pilot Airplane

Full Year

Flight Simulator: will give students hands-on experience, training, and knowledge in preparation for
the real world experience of flying. Students will learn the basic skills needed to fly an airplane. Some of those
skills include takeoffs, climbs, turns, descents, landing, navigating, and much more. Flight simulation provides a
safe, low stress and cost effective way to learning some of the basic aviation skills that you will need as a pilot.

Program Expectations

Classroom academics require English literacy in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding. Students enrolled in the program must maintain good attendance and pass stage and final exams. Students wanting an instructor endorsement for the FAA Knowledge Exam must have a passing grade in the Private Pilot ground course and pass two practice exams with an 80% or higher.

The JATC Aviation Sciences program does not offer flight training through concurrent enrollment. For students wishing to start flight training while enrolled in the Private Pilot ground course must do so on their own and cover their own flight training fees. A student must be 17 years of age to obtain an FAA Private Pilot Certification. The physical condition must be certified by an FAA medical examiner and a student must obtain an FAA Third Class Medical and a student certificate before commencing flight training. Please contact the instructor for more details.

B.S. in Aviation from Utah State University

M.A.S. in Aviation with an emphasis in safety from Utah State University

Josh started his flight training in the year 2000 and has worked as a flight instructor, tour guide pilot, corporate pilot and airline pilot. With 10,000 hours of flying experience he has a lot of experience to share with the students of JATC.  He most recently worked for Delta Air Lines flying the Airbus A320, A220 and A330 aircraft for 7 years.  Prior to Delta Josh spent 7 years with Skywest Airlines flying the Candair Regional Jet.  Beyond flying Josh has been involved in other areas of aviation such as management, training, safety department work and as a professional standards facilitator.  His education includes both a bachelors and masters degree in aviation from Utah State University.  He absolutely loves flying but believes that mentoring young pilots and sharing his passion for aviation are his true callings in professional life.
