PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Welding Technician program at Jordan Academy for Technology & Careers is a two year program that will prepare students for a career in the welding industry, an allied trade, or to further their education in welding or a related field at a college or university. Details of the two program courses are provided below.
These courses provide current enrolment (CE) credit through Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). These credits, and other student progress is transferable to Mountainland Technical College (MTECH) and other post-secondary schools across Utah.
Enrolled students must apply for CE admission as soon as possible. Students need to be admitted to SLCC Concurrent Enrollment BEFORE the start of school on August 18, 2025. Refer to the Concurrent Enrollment Guide for more information on how to apply.
Beginning students in WELDING ACADEMY will learn the fundamentals of welding & shop safety, tool & equipment operation, and hot & cold metalworking. They will also develop welding skills in the processes of, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Stick), Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG), Flux Core Arc Welding, and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG). The concurrent enrollment course for this program is the start of the Non-Destructive Testing Certificate/Degree at SLCC, and is transferrable to any Utah college with a similar program.
Students are expected to arrive to class each day ready to work in the shop wearing their personal protective equipment (PPE). They are required to wear a clean, cotton (minimum 80%) t-shirt, and denim pants; both with no holes, frays, tears, etc. They must also wear leather, steel/composite toe boots. Beginning Welding students will be provided with basic PPE (eye & ear protection) and tools. However, students planning to apply for Advanced Welding the following year are encouraged to purchase their own tools. Refer to the Student Supplied Tools List posted to the right for a list of what tools are recommended.
Careers in Welding- Every Day PM, JATC South, Jensen (Periods 3,4,7, & 8)
Advanced students in CAREERS IN WELDING will build upon the skills they have learned in their previous welding classes. They will practice the process they have already learned in more challenging positions. Students will also learn advanced welding processes & techniques, thermal cutting CNC programming & operation, and how to weld aluminum and stainless steels. The concurrent enrollment courses for this program are the start of the Welding Technician certificate/degree programs at SLCC, and are transferrable to any college in Utah with a similar program. Additionally, these courses earn students that finish with a 2.0 GPA or better 2 free semesters (tuition only) at SLCC after high school.
Advanced students will have the opportunity to meet and learn from welding industry professionals through field trips, industry spotlights, career expos, etc. Most of these industry partners are looking to hire Jordan Academy Welding students upon their graduation. Building career success skills is a primary objective of the Advanced Welding course.

There are several tool kits available to rent for students on the Fee Waiver program. They are limited in number, and available on a first come, first served basis. Contact our main office at JATC South for more information on tool kit rentals.
Internships:
Careers in Welding students will have the opportunity to complete an internship with one of several industry partners in the valley. These internships will take place during the spring semester. Interested students will have to apply and interview with a panel of these industry partners. Students will spend two days a week working with the company they are selected for, and will have to file multiple reports with our internship coordinator for credits.
Interns will work 40 hours with their respective companies over the course of the spring semester, and have the opportunity to hire on with them full time.
Jordan Academy Welding prepares students for future success by building their leadership, confidence, and career success skills through welding technology education and SkillsUSA participation.
This course provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills in preparation to successfully enter and work in the welding industry. It also provides a pathway for students to pursue post-secondary education in welding and related fields.
